[Ministry of Defense, England]: dated [19]39. A woolen RAF ensign flown from RAF Debden, in Essex, England, presumed to have been flying during the Battle of Britain. The flag with the Union Jack at upper left canton, light blue ground with the RAF roundel in red, white and blue, with a short halyard, the hoist stenciled "RAF 39". Some discoloration and wear. 830 x 1860 mm. (32.5 x 73 inches.) Provenance: This flag is said to have flown at the entrance to RAF Debden, and was acquired by a local farmer around 1942, when the base was transferred to American ownership; sold to a British World War II collector in Saffron Walden in the 1970s.
