Sheetz, the principal coordinator of Artillery, Naval Gunfire, and Air attack in the battle of Okinawa, 1945, and later military governor of Okinawa and the surrounding islands. Highlights include: 1. Typed Manuscript with Annotations, 79 pp, 4to, Okinawa, April 4 to June 22, 1945, being a daily ammunition expenditure report compiled by General Sheetz and staff, annotated throughout by Sheetz and others, pages toned and thumbed, some foxing throughout, housed in tan folder with “Ammunition Situation Report” stenciled on upper cover, wear and staining to folder. An intriguing document recording the amount of ammunition spent by the divisions under General Sheetz’s commanding before, during, and just after the Battle of Okinawa, and including the 7th, 27th, 77th, and 96th Division Artillery, the XXXIV Corps Artillery and attached Marine Artillery, and the 1st Marine Artillery. Sheetz adds in pencil at lower margin notations of when the Japanese made their May 4 general attack, and when the Allies responded a few days later. 2. MACARTHUR, DOUGLAS. Typed Letter Signed (“Douglas MacArthur”), 1 p, 4to, “General Headquarters Far East Command,” July 29, 1950, to General Sheetz on the occasion of Sheetz’s retirement, page lightly creased, minor toning and thumbing. MacArthur complements Sheetz on his work as Military Governor, particularly his efforts to restore economic and political stability to the area. With the MacArthur letter are letters from other military digitaries, including Under Secretary of the Army TRACY VOORHEES, Major General EDWARD M. ALMOND, Secretary of Defense LOUIS JOHNSON, Army Chief of Staff JOE COLLINS, General OMAR BRADLEY, Major General EDWARD F. WITSELL, Lt. General JOHN R. HODGE, and others. 3. 19 silver gelatin prints, 8 by 10 inches, of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during their visit to Okinawa, February 6, 1950, each photo with official U.S. Army stamp on verso, all prints with two holes punches at left margin, housed in off white folder, folder soiled and creased. A pictorial record of the visit of Bradley, General Kinkaid, Commander Moreland, General Hickey, and Admiral Sherman to Okinawa.
