PATTON") beneath the image, gelatin silver print, handling creases, image 75 x 115mm., sheet 95 x 120mm., c.1940-1945; together with typescript and copy letters, and ephemera [see footnote] relating to Colonel Nicholas Campanole, a close aide to General Patton (small quantity)FootnotesProvenance: Colonel Nicholas Campanole (1881-1955), of the US Army. He first served as aide to General John Pershing during the Mexican campaign of 1914 and throughout the First World War. He retired in 1937 but was in 1942 was recalled to active duty by General Patton, to as his assistant chief of staff until the end of the Second World War.
Amongst the typescript letters and ephemera accompanying the photograph are: a typescript copy of a letter of commendation from Patton to Campanole ("... your ability in the examination of prisoners and in contacting important civilians is only equalled by your temerity in action", 27 September 1943); a 3-page US War Department Memorandum addressed to Campanole, discussing at length US-Japan relations ("I do not believe that Japan wants war with the United States at all, but she does want her position in Asia to be that of an absolutely dominating nation...", signed by Lt.Col. K.F. Baldwin, 12 February 1920); a 2-page typescript letter signed by D.F. Giera of the Plant Laboratory, Mongaup Valley, N.Y., to Campanole, discussing the making of paralyzing gasses, explosives and incendiary compounds, and his discovery of "three essential new methods for wartime so terrible that there will be nothing left of civilization if same are employed".
