WORLD WAR II, HIROSHIMA BOMBING]. A handmade commemorative plaque made by U.S. Navy Seabees for Col. Paul Tibbetts, pilot and commander of the B-29 the Enola Gay , after the mission which dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6 August 1845, SIGNED BY NINE CREW-MEMBERS including Pilot Col. Paul Tibbetts, Co-pilot Capt. Robert A. Lewis Bombardier Major Thomas Ferebee, Navigator Major Theodore S. Van Kirk, Engineer Wyatt Duzenberry, Radio Operator Richard Nelson Tail Gunner George R. Caron and two Radar operators. Tinian [where the squadron was based], 6 August 1845 [or shortly thereafter]. 380 x 430mm. (15 x 16 7/8 in.) irregular, a wooden plaque of varnished plywood with a plastic emblem of Boeing Co. (makers of the B-29) at top center (the emblem, Col. Tibbets explains, is from the control column of a B-29 Superfortress), dark green lettering "Enola Gay 1st Atomic Bombardment," at top, and "Tinian 6 August 1945" at bottom, with crewmembers listed in two columns with signatures to the left, the lettering and signatures faded. Provenance : Col. Paul Tibbetts, Commanding officer of the 509th Composite Group, commander and co-pilot of the Enola Gay .
