Beschreibung:

[U.S. Army] Map of "German Front in Northeastern France, Evening 5 September 1944" with the German front line in red, "Spearheads of Allied Advance" with blue arrows. Map is marked "No. 6" in lower margin. Approx. 7.5 x 9.5 in. (sight). The arrows are labeled (approx. north to south): "V Corps, XX Corps, XII Corps, VI Corps," and "II Fr Corps ." The map illustrates the central front from the Swiss border through Alsace-Lorraine and Luxembourg. After Paris was liberated in August, the Allies began to push the Germans back to their borders with a three-prong attack, with the British under Bernard Montgomery in the north, Omar Bradley (1893-1981) in the center (12th Army Group) and the south, Jacob Devers (1887-1979) (6th Army Group). By mid-September, Devers had cleared the south and met up with Bradley in the center. This map illustrates those positions. Joseph "Lightning Joe" Lawton Collins (1896-1987) commanded the VII Corps in the Normandy invasion and was just coming out of Operation Cobra, the offensive to take the northwest part of France. This map is signed "J. Lawton Collins, CG VII Corps" at the top (northwest), "Omar N. Bradley" in the left center, and "Jacob Devers" in the south beside the VI Corps arrow. In the lower margin, the map is inscribed and signed by "Gunther Blumentritt, Munchen, Mar. 1965 / general (ret.)." Blumentritt (1892-1967) served in WWI, before becoming a general for Nazi Germany in WWII. He was involved in the invasions of Poland, France, and started planning the invasion of Britain, before the Germans gave up on that idea. He became involved in the defense of France against Allied invasion as Chief of Staff of first Rundstedt, then Kluge, after the former was removed from command a month after the Allies invaded. Blumentritt was implicated in a(nother) plot to kill Hitler, but der Fuhrer did not believe him guilty, so he survived the following purge. A significant group of signatures illustrating the beginning of the end of the European theater in WWII. Condition: Folds apparent. Appears to be fine, but not removed from frame for examination.
