The Union of South Africa National flag of three parallel colors blue, white and orange, with a small Union Jack and South African Republic flags stitched in at the center, 830 x 1790 mm. The hoist stamped "41 3 S.A. Inf Bde," with halyard. In fair to good condition. The South African 3rd Infantry Division was formed on 23rd October 1940, head quartered in Pretoria, and commanded by Major General Hermanus Botha. They organised and trained the South Africa home defense forces and supplied replacements for the 1st and 2nd divisions which were deployed in East Africa and the Western desert of North Africa. The 3rd Infantry was dissolved in 1943. The Union of South Africa was a Dominion of the British Empire from 1928 until their independence in 1961. South African forces were mainly used in African operations in World War II; South African pilots joined the RAF.
