Beschreibung:

An official British Signal informing the 21st Army Group to cease Offensive Operations immediately and ceasefire the following day.. Dated [May] 4 2050 hours. A single 8vo roneo sheet, purple ink, likely distributed to officers of the 21st Army spread around Denmark, the Netherland and Northern Germany. Pencil signature at upper right, "Pte Palling". Old folds with some wear, on verso a series of 6 lines of letters set out in 4s, in pencil, possibly an encrypted code. The first ceasefire of World War II occurred on Luneburg Heath, south of Hamburg, on May 4th at 1830, when Doenitz ordered his Northern Generals to surrender to the British. General Montgomery accepted the surrender of the German Forces in Northern Germany, Netherlands and Denmark, in a tent near Luneburg Heath. a few hours later the ceasefire was communicated to all the Forces in 21 Group, namely the First Canadian Army, Second British Army, and the 79th Armed Division. A curious piece of military history this document ordering the 21st Army Group, to cease all offensive operations from receipt of this signal. Going on to say that all troops were to ceasefire at 0800 hours tomorrow 5th May. The message goes on to say that these provisions apply solely to the 21 Army Group. The official Surrender of all German forces took longer to organize, and was signed in the early hours of May 7th at SHAEF HQ in Rheims, France.
