[USA: 1941-45.] A United States woolen Ensign (Stars and Stripes), from USS Plunkett DD-431, a Gleaves Class Destroyer, 48 linen stars sewn on each side, the hoist stenciled "US ENSIGN 9 DD 431". 4 oxidised grommets. Some staining and a few holes through age. 1110 x 1980 mm. (43 x 66 inches.) A fine US Naval Destroyer's flag. The Plunkett is named after Rear Admiral Charles Plunkett, and was laid down in March 1939, and served in British home Waters on patrol in the North Sea, and in the Russian sea, and the Mediterranean, and was present in support of the Invasion of Sicily, and off Omaha Beach June 6th to 9th, and again in support of Operation Dragoon in Southern France.
