Contemporary sheep, spine gilt in compartments (rubbed and scuffed with small losses, spine-ends chipped, splits on joints). Provenance : Jane Ashley (early inscription on title). FIRST EDITION. RARE. First published in 1772, new editions of The Rural Christian followed in 1776, 1781, and 1794; the present, first edition (which is illustrated by the author) is particularly scarce, with ESTC only recording four copies (the British Library and the Bodleian in Britain; University of Alberta Library in Canada; William Andrews Clark Library, University of California in North America). Similarly, the work is rare at auction, and no copy is recorded by ABPC since 1975. ESTC T60900
