Title: Writing Across the Landscape [WITHDRAWN] (Travel Journals) – unpublished working manuscript Author: Ferlinghetti, Lawrence [WITHDRAWN] Place: [San Francisco?] Publisher: Date: January 1987 Description: [WITHDRAWN FROM SALE]. Edited by Stephen Ronan. 226 total leaves, including title (inked and printed) and 4-page chapter contents: A 1-5 (writings 1941-50 which are not included here) and B 1-45 (all appear present – most are identified on top margin). Text in a mix of: type, mimeograph, computer print-out, plus hand-written / holograph additions (some in multiple lines); final page (titled as such) signed at very end by Ferlinghetti in black ink. 11x8½ loose pages, 15 sections are corner stapled, housed together in manila folder titled and signed by Ferlinghetti in red ink. [WITHDRAWN]. Ferlinghetti’s unpublished travel writings from around the world, compiled over several years, written in journal format, beginning January 1960 to September 1984. Travels to Cuba, France, Italy, Spain, Tangiers, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Fiji, Australia, Hawaii, Colorado, North Carolina, Florida, New Orleans, Big Sur, etc., etc., etc. Throughout, contains Ferlinghetti’s holograph corrections, additional hand-written entries, side notes, cross-outs (of which content can still be read), mostly in pencil, but also pen, marker, crayon, etc. It was submitted to New Directions in 1987 by Ferlinghetti for publication but after longtime editor/publisher/friend James Laughlin retired, it was denied by new chief Griselda Ohannessian. Unfortunate since this work is more aggressive and graphic (less tame) than the normal light Ferlinghetti style. In a rejection letter from Ohannessian to Ferlinghetti dated May 12, 1987, she writes: “The gravy days of the sixties and very early seventies are over, and every publisher as you of course know is now faced with shrinking outlets and shrinking audiences. I think that one reason City Lights can sell more copies of your titles than other stores seem to be doing is all tied up with the very special nature of your bookstore and its relation to you…Your travel journals are under consideration…I have, to be upfront about it, some hesitations because it is rather a mixed bag. It has some wonderful well-wrought sections, but others are no more, no less than hurriedly-noted journal entries of rather routine interest. It suffers somewhat…from being material assembled from the past, rather than new work from now. We wonder, if rather than being a book in itself, these journals might serve as the wellspring for a fuller memoir…Cheer up!…”. A photocopy of this letter is included. And, of course recounts / mentions Beat people, themes and places: Kerouac, Yevtushenko, Voznesenski, Ginsberg, Carl Solomon, Corso, Micheline, Huncke, Whalen, Lamantia, Snyder, City Lights, Catholic Churches, various conferences, etc., plus other authors: Gertrude Stein, Octavio Paz, Proust, etc. Lot Amendments Condition: Occasional light wear, a few minor / small stains, near fine to fine.
