Yemen in 1937 and 1938, documented by Italian traveller B.V. Clementi, two albums of black & white photography with manuscript annotations and captions [Yemen, 1936-38] with over 300 original black and white photographs mounted on 40 album leaves (across 2 separate photo albums), individual captions in blue ink for most of the images, image numbered (sometimes on photograph) in blue, manuscript map of routes taken around Yemen tipped onto first leaf of one album, original tissue-guards protecting the pages, typed letters from the owner B.V. Clementi about the collection mounted to first page of each volume, albums each c. 245 by 315 mm. A remarkable insight into the social, traditional, and historical state of Yemen in the early twentieth century, documented by a European enthusiast recording his travels in the region from 1936 to 1938. The photos included cover the landscape and ancient sites from Sanaa to Taizz via Yerim, also to Hodeida via Menakha and Medinat el Abid among others, with images of local villagers and cultural events along the way. Many of the individuals photographed have captions to identify them by their full names and official titles, all ancient and historic cites have been identified, and the images also include some manuscripts and items of antiquity that Mr Clementi came across during his travels.
