YNOI, François (fl. c. 1512).] Les Avertissemens es trois estats du mde selon la signification de ung monstre ne lan mille. v. ce[n]s &. xii. Par lequels on pourra prendre avis a soy regir a tousioursmais . Valence, Dauphiny: Jehan Belon, 18 September 1513. 4° (223 x 158mm). Title with woodcut initial and 6 small woodcut illustrations of religious subjects [2 initials] within a border composed of 7 decorative woodcut bands. Gothic type in double columns. Woodcut illustration, initials and printer's device on L4v. (Occasional light marking, L4 a little soiled and with a few skilfully repaired tears slightly affecting text.) Modern brown morocco gilt in period style, sides panelled with central lozenges, gilt spine. Provenance : neat marginal foliation in an early hand -- 'BJB' (discreet marginal inkstamp on E3v) -- occasional modern pencilled markings. RARE. FIRST EDITION OF 'A CURIOUS MORALISATION ON THE BIRTH OF A MONSTER AT RAVENNA' (Davies, Murray French ), from the press of the first printer in Valence. The twenty chapters of the work discuss the appearance of the monster, and the theological interpretations possible. The writer (who gives his name as 'Francoys Ynoi' on A6r), describes the monster as a creature with a human head crowned with a horn and a body formed of limbs similar to those of various animals; on his chest were the letters 'IXU', shown in the woodcut illustration on B1v. Fairfax Murray notes that the present work 'appears to be the 5th book produced [in Valence]'. Only one copy of the work is recorded at auction since 1975. Brunet I, 583; Davies, Murray French 23.
