Brass covered iron bit with attached old typewritten label reading "Bit used by horse belonging to Gen. (sic) Klock, for dress parade, during Revolutionary Muster days in the Mohawk valley." Colonel Jacob Klock (1701 - 1798) was a militia officer, farmer and tavern keeper near the Mohawk village of Canajoharie. He was disliked by the pro-British Mohawks who, under the leadership of Joseph Brant, ran him out of town. He fought at the Battle of Oriskany and served as the Chairman of the Tryon County (New York) Committee of Safety. Provenance: John Ashworth collection. Condition: Good. Dark patina finish, paper tag yellow with age.
