Car no. 381040S Founded in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1907, Edward Murphy’s Oakland Motor Car Co. commenced production with a very fragile, twin-cylinder car with planetary transmission, designed by A.P. Brush. The car was not an instant success and Murphy resolved to move into the larger car market, embarking on production of a line of successful and robust four cylinder cars. The Oakland Motor Car Co. was absorbed into William C. Durant’s mighty General Motors conglomerate in 1909, giving the company the financial resources it needed to develop its range of cars. The four cylinder cars were marketed as ‘The Car with a Conscience’ and the radiators carried the oak leaf and acorn emblem. In 1914 the six-cylinder Models 6-60 and 6-48 were added to the well established four cylinder models in Oakland’s sales catalogs. This sporting Model 38 Speedster is believed to date from 1916 and is powered by a four cylinder, monobloc engine driving through a three speed gearbox. The speedster coachwork is of later manufacture but in period style. It is presented in yellow and black livery with deep-buttoned black leather upholstery, the seat cushions having been recently upholstered to a high standard. Road equipment includes varnished wooden wheels with 34X4 tires, electric lighting, tool/luggage box, a Stewart speedometer and rim wind dash clock and a radiator calormeter. Although not illustrated the car comes with a top which is in need of some refurbishment. The car has not seen active use recently but we are assured it starts and runs, although the usual safety checks and recommissioning are recommended. As in its heyday, this attractive speedster offers brisk and fun motoring at a budget price. It comes with a Massachusetts Certificate of Title.
