Despite, or perhaps because of, its simplicity, the Austin Seven was a huge success from the moment deliveries commenced in January 1923 and would come to dominate the light car market in Britain. In essence the Seven changed little in the course of its sixteen-year production life, retaining the ‘A’-frame chassis, transverse front springing, rear quarter elliptics and four-cylinder sidevalve engine to the end. There were, of course, numerous detail improvements along the way, a longer wheelbase, roomier bodies, coupled brakes and a three-bearing crankshaft to name but four. The sole version available when production commenced was the ‘Chummy’ tourer. Saloon, fabric saloon and coupe models, plus a roomier tourer, were on offer by 1927, and with the introduction of re-styled, short-scuttle bodies in June 1930, the range lost its vintage look. First registered on 30th December 1930, this Seven saloon has enjoyed just one registered keeper since being purchased from Heath Bros, of Frensham, in February 1955. ‘UR 8364’ is reported to have undertaken - in period - a non-stop run from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and incorporates a number of associated modifications including three fuel tanks. The vehicle is offered with assorted invoices, handbook, spare parts list, old-style logbook, Swansea V5 and an almost continuous run of expired MoTs dating from 1960 to 1984. It is expected that further information about its history will be available at time of sale.
