The power unit for Bentley’s first all-new post-war car, introduced in 1946, was a silky smooth, 4 1/4 liter, six-cylinder engine with inlet over exhaust valves, which had been well proven in military service and this drove through a four speed manual gearbox with the traditional right hand change lever. Rolls-Royce and Bentley were traditionally coy about the power output but the car had that superb flexibility which enabled top gear to be utilised from 10mph onwards with little apparent strain. Chassis B 105 DZ was supplied in November 1948 by London dealers Jack Barclay to its first owner J W S Utley of Northern England. Factory records confirm that this car originally carried standard factory coachwork. We are advised that in more recent years this car has been fitted with the later 4,566cc engine, commonly referred to as the ‘big bore’ engine, and it is thought that this particular engine has never been used in a car. An invoice on file records the purchase of this chassis from British Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists, Messrs Adams & Oliver, in 1981. It was prepared as a complete rolling chassis by Frank Cooke as an R-R.O.C. Seminar display chassis. It features a manual gearbox and is complete with radiator and surround, a complete center dashboard, fire wall, transmission and steering. It is many years since this display chassis was exhibited and it has certainly not been started or run since. It is offered for sale strictly as viewed.
