As the country slowly reverted to a peacetime economy, Rolls-Royce moved its Motor Division out of Derby to a facility it had established at Crewe in Cheshire for the purpose of building Spitfire engines. Pyms Lane was to become the longest ever serving home to the marque; and it so remains today. The motor manufacturers of Great Britain woke up to a new reality, with a completely new and ultra-punitive taxation culture - a direct consequence of the massive debt that the country had run up in order to defeat fascism. In this austere climate, Rolls-Royce were faced with a massive challenge to which they rose with great credit and foresight when they launched the Mk. VI. This model employed a six-cylinder 4¼ litre engine in a hefty chassis fitted with independent front suspension. The Bentley Mk. VI was designed, as far as is possible with Rolls-Royce, as a mass-production model in order to earn the Company as much hard currency as possible. With this in mind, for the first time ever, they produced a model with a standard steel saloon body, although rolling chassis could be purchased and delivered to a coachbuilders to be fitted with a body designed to your personal specification, as every Bentley produced prior to 1940 had been. The great success of this model ensured sufficient breathing space for the parent company to re-establish its presence in the post-war motoring world. This very original 1952 Bentley Mk. VI is fitted with the more desirable 4½ litre engine and has had just four owners from new. Just over seven years ago, the car was checked through completely for the Bentley Drivers Club 3000 mile run to Sicily which was completed without any problems, since then the car has been laid up and has had very little use. In recent months, this Mk. VI has been gone through mechanically having a new starter motor fitted and has received some minor cosmetic work. Finished in Tudor Grey with the original tan leather interior, this Bentley is supplied with a V5C registration document, the original buff log book and a history file containing old MoT test certificates going back to 1990 showing the car has only completed 6,000 miles, including the BDC run, in the last 23 years. The Bentley Mk. VI has always been regarded as the entry level to classic Bentley ownership but in recent years they have become sought after in their own right as a very usable, reliable and valuable classic Bentley which can be taken to any type of event.
