1960 BENTLEY S2 CONTINENTAL FLYING SPUR COACHWORK BY H.J.MULLINER Chassis No. BC24LAR Engine: V8 overhead valve, 6,230cc; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: front, independent coil, rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel servo-assisted drums. Left hand drive. The S2 series of Bentley motor cars was introduced to the public in August 1959. The major change from the earlier cars was the fitment of a V8 engine, which gave a horsepower increase of some 25 over the preceding series. This enabled the car to out-perform comfortably an S1, but retain similar fuel consumption. In addition to the standard chassis of the Bentley, a Continental variant was also made available. This modification, however, was only offered with a coachbuilt body, the most popular of which was the graceful Mulliner four door 'Flying Spur'. After the Second World War, H.J. Mulliner became the premier English coachbuilding house, and the elegance of its designs was rarely exceeded around the world. This particular style, a continuation of design number 7443 which was first offered in 1957, was created by George Moseley, the chief designer at H. J. Mulliner. The superb styling and excellent quality of construction typified the work done at Mulliner. As the cost of the impressive 'Flying Spur' was some 50 over and above the price of a standard car, the Continental rapidly became the choice of discerning and wealthy drivers throughout the world. In March 1960, the French concessionaires for Rolls-Royce and Bentley (Franco-Britannic Automobiles) supplied the new BC24LAR to the renowned bon vivant and amateur Grand Prix driver, skier and racehorse owner, Eduardo da Silva Ramos. With a wide range of sporting interests and the financial ability to enjoy them, Mr. Da Silva Ramos epitomized those for whom this very special model was built. Originally delivered in a two-tone color scheme which was extremely popular in the late 1950's, BC24LAR is now finished in dark green with beige leather. Original equipment on this model included air conditioning, electric windows and French Marchal parking lamps. The car moved from France to Southern California in the early 1970's, and it has been the cherished possession of a Los Angeles attorney based in Beverly Hills for the majority of the last 20 years. It has an extensive service history and appears well maintained, rather than in concours condition. The upholstery looks original, and the driver's seat and arm rest is showing signs of significant use. The paintwork, woodwork and chrome are very presentable, but not perfect. In the trunk there is a spare wheel, a jack, some small tools and the original flashlight. The badge bar confirms its early French heritage and includes the Automobile Club Cannes and Touring Club De France badges. The only apparent modification from its original state is the fitting of a modern Alpine radio and compact disc sound system.
