"Despite the passage of three decades, they remain stunning. The lines are sleek; the proportions artfully well defined. Many timeless Ferrari cues are present. An egg-crate grille, a scooped, expansive hood covering a powerful V12 and rakish, cascading fenders offer immediate recognition." – Cavallino magazine. By the time of the second series 250GT Cabriolet’s introduction in 1960, the open two seater had become a permanent fixture of Maranello's range, Mario Boano's offering on chassis number '0461GT', exhibited at Geneva in March 1956, being considered the probable inspiration for the Pinin Farina-designed series that followed. Exhibited for the first time at the 1957 Geneva Salon, the latter's first 250GT cabriolet was snapped up by Ferrari works driver Peter Collins The introduction of the 250GT Series II Cabriolet saw the overall look and proportions of the Series I being retained. The Series I's covered headlights were deleted and the newcomer gained a more luxurious interior to satisfy Ferrari’s ever more demanding clientele. Power output of the Colombo-designed 'outside plug' Tipo 128F 3-litre V12 was 240bhp at 7,000rpm. The 2,600mm wheelbase chassis followed Ferrari's established practice, being a multi-tubular frame tied together by oval main tubes, with coil spring independent front suspension and a live rear axle. Four-wheel disc brakes and a four-speeds-plus-overdrive gearbox were standard equipment from the start of Series II production. Redolent of the dolce vita era, Ferrari's first production convertible was a natural choice for playboys and aristocrats, a silver example serving as David Niven’s personal conveyance in the original Pink Panther film and Dominican bon viveur and sometime racing driver Porfirio Rubirosa famously perishing at the wheel of his after a night on the town in 1960s Paris. Originally finished in Grigio Fumo (smoke grey) with beige leather, this car was built in September 1960 and was sold new to a client in California. It was acquired by the Belgian vendor in South Africa in 1986, whereupon it was imported to Belgium and checked over by Ferrari dealer Monza in Ghent, who have maintained the car since then. The owner reports that all numbers on the car are correct, and the car is in good condition, “a real driver”. Owner and car took part in the Ferrari Owner’s Club Tour de Belgique this year, receiving the Oldtimer prize. Offered with Belgian registration, valid roadworthiness certificate and original hood and tonneau cover, this elegant convertible is now finished in Rosso Corsa with black leather upholstery. A good looking and attractively priced open Ferrari V12. Import taxes will be liable if the car remains in Switzerland.
