1961 Jaguar Mk. X (3.8 litre) Ex-Sir William Lyons Lot Number 204 Registration 7868 RW Chassis Number 300044 BW Engine Number ZA 1065-8 Odometer reading 71,357 miles Estimate £60,000 - £70,000 Print details Send this to a friend 5 more images The Jaguar Mk. X was the top of the range saloon car built by the British manufacturer primarily aimed at the United States market. The unitary construction body-shell was codenamed 'Zenith' during development and this floor pan continued in production long after Mk. X production ended, as the DS420 Limousine. The interior was the last Jaguar with abundant standard woodwork, including the dashboard, escutcheons, window trim, a pair of large bookmatched fold-out rear picnic tables and a front seat pull-out picnic table stowed beneath the instrument cluster. Later, air conditioning and a sound-proof glass division between the front and rear seats were available as options. The Mk. X was the first Jaguar saloon to feature independent rear suspension and differed from earlier large Jaguar saloons in having 14" wheels instead of the more common 15". The front suspension used double wishbones with coil springs and telescopic dampers. The car initially featured a 3,781cc version of Jaguar's XK in-line, six-cylinder engine. For the London Motor Show in October 1964, the enlarged 4,235cc unit took over although the 3.8-litre unit could still be specified until October 1965. Many domestic market cars and almost all cars destined for the important North American markets left the factory with a Borg Warner automatic gearbox. Stopping power for this heavy car came from servo assisted disc-brakes on all four wheels; power assisted steering was standard. Manufactured in December 1961, this Jaguar Mk. X was built specifically for and to the exact requirements of Sir William Lyons , the then Managing Director of Jaguar Cars and delivered to him in January 1962. He used the car on a regular basis for three years with Lady Lyons, often being chauffeur-driven to meetings and social events. With such a highly esteemed end user, this Jaguar was built to a very high standard with the unique features at the time of electric windows to the rear as well as the front, vanity mirrors fitted discreetly to the picnic tables and air conditioning- a rare feature at the time. This example was one of the very first 'Zenith' cars to be manufactured and is finished in the original colour combination of Opalescent Dark Green with a Beige leather interior and still bears its original Coventry number plate - 7868 RW. Having been professionally restored over a two year period, with receipts for tens of thousands on file from renown Jaguar specialists, including Jaguar Heritage and as such she presents in excellent condition. The rebuilt engine ran beautifully during our demonstration, with excellent oil pressure and no adverse noises. Bodily it is hard to imagine a better example than this and the evocative curves of such a large car are delightful with uniform panel gaps and an excellent paint finish. Open the door and you are welcomed to a magnificent interior with space, wood and leather in plentiful supply; a genuine luxury car of the period. It comes supplied with a heritage certificate, a V5C registration document, together with a current MoT test certificate and a history folder. It is rare to see a Jaguar Mk. 10 these days; to find one in this condition and with such historical value, having been used by Sir William Lyons himself, is virtually impossible. The painstaking restoration of what is a significant piece of motoring heritage, owned by Mr. Jaguar, has been recognised and featured in the February (issue 166) of Octane magazine as well as the marque specialist Jaguar World magazine (February issue).
