The car was launched in September 1963 at the newly opened Arese plant, and displayed later that month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The overall styling of the Giulia was kept very simple however, the Giulia had a very distinctive Scalino “step front” design with the bonnet sitting approximately 1/4 inch above the nose of the car. Alfa Romeo was one of the first manufacturers to put a powerful engine in a lightweight car for mainstream production, making it a forerunner to today's performance saloons. The Giulia was powered by Alfa Romeo’s twin cam, all-aluminium, four cylinder 1,570cc engine mated to a 5 speed gearbox. This punchy power plant ensured the car's performance was better than many sports cars of the era. Alfa Romeo took “Touring Car” racing by storm winning the European Touring Car Championship in 1966, 1967 and 1968. The Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Sprint (Race Car) offered here is a 1965 supplied example finished in Alfa Romeo Rosso Red with Tricalore strip. This very competitive car was purchased from Mark Garritt in January 2011, who had been running it in various HSCC and other historic series. Having been campaigned by its current owner in the CSCC Swinging Sixties races, the car has secured over thirty class wins since 2014 including last year at Spa-Francorchamps. The car has been prepared to the highest possible standard with a 2-litre twin-cam engine. The engine and gearbox were built by renowned Alfa expert Jim Evans in 2011. The car also benefits from a Jim Evans cylinder head and is supplied with bills in excess of £8000 for this work alone. The engine was rebuilt again in 2016 including replacement piston liners and with the addition of a programmable distributor. The car achieved 220 bhp when put on the dyno with Pete Baldwin in October 2016 before only one race at Donington. The car is fitted with a full roll cage, appropriate Sparco seat, TRS harnesses, Lifeline extinguisher and Electrical cut offs (all date limited parts are still current). Other significant features include Brembo brakes, lightweight racing screen, twin 50 Weber carburettors, spare magnesium Minilite wheels with Yokohama tyres, bespoke electrical panel, adjustable pedal box, stack instruments and long range fuel tank. Supplied with a large history file, this competitive example is in race ready condition and a very attractive proposition to those wanting to race seriously.
