THE PORSCHE 993 GT2
The introduction in 1995 of the new 993 marked the last of the great air-cooled 911s. The new model was a radical evolution of its predecessor, retaining only the roof and deck lid from the 964. Stylistically the car was widely lauded at the time and since as the most attractive of the modern 911s, incorporating redesigned bodywork and poly-ellipsoid low-beam and variable focus headlights. Upgraded brakes, a six-speed gearbox, multi-link rear suspension and strengthened front and rear subframes significantly enhanced road holding and performance characteristics.
However, the new 993 also posed a challenge for the Stuttgart marques competition efforts. Porsche's success with the four-wheel drive 961, combined with Audi's dominance in rallying and latterly the track success of the Nissan Skyline, meant that by the mid-1990s four-wheel drive was being banned by most sanctioning bodies. This was a particular issue for Porsche whose Turbo was based around the four-wheel drive format. The solution was the GT2.
To make the GT2 fit for track use the brakes, suspension, and wheels were all up-rated to cope with the substantial increase in performance, while aerodynamic downforce was enhanced by a larger front air dam and a rear spoiler. Thanks to rear-wheel drive configuration, the GT2 was considerably lighter - by some 300kg - than its Turbo parent. This weight saving was achieved through the use of aluminium body panels and lightweight racing seats, and the deletion of many of the interior fittings, including the Turbo's soundproofing and rear seats.
On track the car was an instant success. In IMSA Hans Stuck Jr., Derek Bell, Thierry Boutsen, and Bill Adam all proved to be a consistent threats at the wheel of GT2s. The car racked up podium places, 2nd in class at the 1995 Sebring 12 Hours, 2nd again at Watkins Glen, won its class at the 1996 Sebring 12 Hours, and placed 2nd at 1997 Daytona 24 Hours.
It was this competition purpose which also brought the GT2 to the road as a requirement of homologation for the track. Road going examples boasted around 430 horsepower thanks to higher boost than the standard turbo, bringing them close to their racing counterparts. Acceleration was breathtaking, with 100mph (161km/h) reached from a standstill in a mere 7.2 seconds (at the time, only the McLaren F1 got there quicker). The cutaway fenders, and removeable flares were also incorporated directly as a result of the car's racing purpose.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
Chassis WPOZZZ99ZTS392111 was completed in July 1995, finished in Polar Silver with a Black Leatherette interior. Factory options included Air Conditioning, Electric Windows, Preparation for Radio, Green Graduated Tint Windscreen, Higher Amperage Battery and Airbags. The car was delivered new to Japan, and has remained in the hands of its first and only owner. Covering just under 5000 km in its lifetime. It is offered today in remarkably original condition and complete with its original service book, manuals and tools. The owner informs us that it has been regularly serviced throughout his care despite the low mileage.
Of the fifty-seven road cars built a vanishingly small number must remain with their first owners, and therefore the opportunity to purchase such an original, low mileage car, with such provenance should not be missed.
