Frontis and 10 plates. Large 12mo, modern dark green morocco by MacDonald of New York, marbled paper boards, gilt decorated and lettered spine, t.e.g. Original cloth spine bound in the rear. Ninth edition, as stated on the title page. The impressive history of Native Americans by New England antiquary, bookseller and publisher Samuel G. Drake (1798-1875), which served as source-book for authors like Nathaniel Hawthorne, George Bancroft and Jared Sparks. The Book of the Indians was first published as Indian Biography in 1833. The eighth and ninth editions contain several handsome engraved portraits of Osceola, Joseph Thayendandeken, Patalesharoo, Pocahontas and others which are not in the earlier editions.
