At Cambrai, in March, 1918, he showed untiring energy in rescuing wounded under heavy artillery fire, when several direct hits were obtained on battalion headquarters.’ Belgian Croix de Guerre London Gazette 12 July 1918. William Moutenay was born in Mansfield in September 1880. A Miner by occupation, he enlisted into the Derbyshire Regiment on 25 January 1899. He served with his regiment in the Boer War and was with No. 4 Company, 28th Mounted Infantry. He was present at the action of Boschbult, 31 March 1902. As C.S.M. of 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 2 May 1915. He remained there until 15 May 1915 when he was invalided home due to wounds. He returned as R.S.M. on 30 September 1915. Mountenay was wounded again on 15 October 1915 during the attack on Point 60 near the Hohenzollern Redoubt. He was awarded the D.C.M. for service during March-November 1918 and in particular for his bravery at Cambrai during March 1918. Mountenay was discharged on 18 August 1921. He died on 7 April 1956.
