A FRENCH CASED PAIR OF FINE PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS SIGNED F N I PAR GASTINNE RENETTE À PARIS CIRCA 1865 With blued barrels formed in three octagonal stages, signed within the fluted median, cut with multigroove rifling and fitted with blued fore-sights, case-hardened breeches and breech tangs numbered 1 and 2, finely engraved with bouquet and scroll patterns and the tangs fitted with blued adjustable back-sights, case-hardened locks decorated en suite (one hammer spur detached), ebony half-stocks, the fore-ends finely carved with scrolling foliage in low relief on a contrasting stippled ground, chequered butts with engraved case-hardened caps, engraved blued spurred trigger-guards each with the owner's crest and monogramed initials 'AV' encrusted in gold, case-hardened trigger-plates with engraved finials, engraved blued small plates under the side-nails, blued barrel-bolts impaling blued escutcheons, and in near-unfired condition: in original brass-bound fitted mahogany case, lined in blue baize, the lid signed in gilt-stamped letters 'Gastinne- Renette Paris', and retaining almost all of its original accessories (oil bottle missing, the fitted interior with slight shrinkage around the case walls, the lining with small patches of wear and insect damage) 17in (43.2cm)
