A George III inlaid mahogany mercury wheel barometer F. Saltery Vechio and Company, London, early 19th century With open triangular pediment, parquetry strung cornice and marquetry rosette to top over triple-line strung baluster outline upright applied with arch-glazed Fahrenheit scale alcohol thermometer flanked by conch shell motifs, the 8 inch rosette and husk swag centred circular silvered register signed F. Saltery Vechio & Co., No. 94, Holborn Hill, LONDON to centre within concentric scale annotated in barometric inches with horizontal text of the usual observations to circumference and generous cast brass bezel, the rounded base with further marquetry rosette, 97cm (38.25ins) high. Provenance: Private collection, Hampshire (ref. B5); purchased from Rayment Antiques Limited, Bagthorpe, Norfolk, 25th October 1979 for £525. F. Saltery Vechio and Company are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from 94 Holborn Hill, London circa 1800-30.
