A George III sterling silver small mug, London 1776 by John Deacon Of baluster form with leaf capped C scroll handle. The body with later 19th century embossed decoration of foliage, C scrolls, and lattice reserves, later engraved to the front with JW to MSC 1855. Fully marked underneath. Height – 9.2 cm / 3.65 inches Weight – 147 grams / 4.73 ozt John Deacon was apprenticed to John Moore on the 19th January 1759, and free on the 2nd July 1766. He entered a mark as a plateworker on the 11th September 1776, at 23 Greenhills Rents, St John Street. “An earlier mark was probably in the missing book before 1773. He appears as plateworker, 1 Love Lane, Wood Steet in the parliamentary report list 1773. Heal records him as goldsmith, Addle Street, 1771 (…) he is recorded as bankrupt April 1775, in Wood Street.”
