A HENRY VIII JOINED OAK COFFER, circa 1525, the rectangular lid composed of two recessed rectangular panels over the front composed of four panels, each containing a "Romayne" head in profile within incised circular frames and leafy spandrels, on stile supports, 58.5" wide x 21.75" deep The distinctive English form of joined coffer is a rare survival. The profile portraits appear to represent actual people as opposed to the more usually encountered "Romayne" busts. Tobias Jellinek illustrates a chair, dateable to 1525, with a comparable panel in the back in "Early British Chairs and Seats 1500-1700", published 2009.
