EDO PERIOD (17TH CENTURY), SIGNED HIZEN JU HARIMA (NO) KAMI FUJIWARA TADAKUNI (TADAKUNI I) AND WITH CHRYSANTHEMUM CREST AND PEONY CREST
A Hizen Katana in Mounts Edo period (17th century), signed Hizen ju Harima (no) kami Fujiwara Tadakuni (Tadakuni I) and with chrysanthemum crest and peony crest Sugata [configuration]: hon-zukuri, iori-mune, chu-kissaki Kitae [forging pattern]: itame mixed with mokume Hamon [tempering pattern]: gunome choji with deep nioi and nie with ashi, sunagashi and kinsuji Boshi [tip]: suguha ko-maru Horimono [carving]: both sides carved with bo-hi, marudome Nakago [tang]: ubu, iriyama-gata, katte sagari file marks and one peg hole Habaki [collar]: double, gold Nagasa [length from tip to beginning of tang]: 29¼in. (70.4cm.) long Motohaba [width at start of tempered edge]: 1¼in. (2.9cm.) Sakihaba [ width before tip]: 7/8in. (2.3cm.) In shirasaya [plain wood scabbard] 19th-century koshirae comprising a black-lacquer saya mounted with shakudo nanako-ji kurikata and kojiri decorated with flowering vines in gold taka-zogan , tsuka mounted with fuchi-gashira decorated to match saya hardware and with gold, silver and shakudo menuki of phoenix in paulownia, rounded-rectangular tsuba lacquered black and decorated with sprays of paulownia in gold hiramaki-e , signed Tokyo Seigyokusai and with red-lacquer kao , 40½in. (103cm.) long With a certificate of registration designating this sword as the 14th Juyo token (Important sword) no. 1874 and certifying this as the work of the 1st generation Tadakuni, issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), dated 1966.4.20
