A JAPANESE BROWN GLAZED VASE BY ITO TOZAN II (1871-1937) MEIJI OR TAISHO PERIOD, 20TH CENTURY Of tall rectangular shape flaring towards the rim, the surface resembling a bamboo fence, a seal mark underneath reading Tozan, together with its original tomobako box inscribed Shiba no ki kabin (Shrub flower vase, made by Tozan), 34.4cm. (2) The family of Ito Tozan II (1871-1937) acted as advisers to the Lords of the Zeze domain in the Shiga Prefecture. The Zeze Domain kilns were established in the 17th century under the patronage of the famous tea master Kobori Enshu (1579-1647) and were famous for their production of brown glazed pottery and tea ceremony utensils. The kilns closed at the end of the 17th century due to financial issues and were re-established by Ito Tozan II and other artists under the name Zeze Kageroen (The Shimmering Garden of Zeze).
