A LOUIS XVI GOLD BOÎTE-À-MINIATURE by Jean-Baptiste Carnay (fl. 1764-1793), marked, Paris, 1781/1782, with the first charge and discharge marks of Henry Clavel 1780-1782, later struck with the Viennese tax mark 1806/1807 and the Dutch post-1955 mark for 18-carat gold of foreign origin, the miniature signed and dated 'van Blarenberghe 1784' Circular box, the independent cover inset with a glazed gouache on card miniature depicting a battle scene with castle in the background, the base engine-turned with concentric reeded circles scattered with pellets and centred by a double rosette with various types of engine-turning, the sides similarly engine-turned with horizontal reeding scattered with pellets, fluted rims, the matted gold borders applied with ropetwist 2 15/16in. (75 mm.) diam.
