Author: Bowen, Emanuel Place: London Publisher: Date: 1747 Description: Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outing, with colored pictorial cartouche. 34x42.5 cm. (13½x16¾"). Detailed and not entirely speculative map of the bulge of West Africa and the Gold Coast during the height of the slave trade, with the numerous foreign factories shown, and text engraved on the map in addition to the many place names, giving such descriptive details as "Kingd. of Gago, from whence they carry Gold to Morocco," "Kingd. of Temian, Anthropoges or Men Eaters," "Desart of Lumptunes, Inhabited by a proud brutish people," etc. Lot Amendments Condition: Slight darkening at centerfold, near fine.
