A 'TRANSYLVANIAN' PRAYER RUG WEST ANATOLIA, EARLY 18TH CENTURY The open madder red mihrab beneath a stepped indigo arch containing stylized saz leaves and small flowerheads within a wide maize-yellow border of polychrome palmettes supported by curling leaves and floral vine between striped guard stripes, partially oxidized browns, areas of repiling and repairs, area of rewoven side, repaired areas to selvage Approximately 5ft.5in. x 4ft.3in. (165cm. x 130cm.) Warp: yellow wool, Z2S, slightly depressed, undulating Weft: two shoots, yellow wool, Z1, red in the inner field and approx. 20cm. on the upper end Pile: wool, Z1 and Z2S (very fibrous), knots symmetrical inclined to the left, H3.0 x V2.3/cm. Sides: yellow and brown wool flatwoven, Z1, bound with three warps on the left and two on the right as an additional fastening, ground-shoot drawn around the first warp Ends: yellow wool, Z1, approx. 3cm. plain weave Remarks: lazy lines, because of the undulating warp the back appears disorderly, the second additional warp is sometimes made of cotton
