A WOOL AND SILK ON LINEN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER AMERICAN, 19TH CENTURY Worked in brown, red, beige, yellow and black silk and wool threads in a variety of cross stitches forming two large horizontal registers divided at the center by a band of scrolling grape leaves, inscribed above with the wrought verse, "Of tomorrow what mortal can boast Or who of a day can be sure In a moment death conquers a host Oh who from his dart is secure./ The sweet rose which blooms fairly to-day Tomorrow may wither and fade, Human nature itself must decay Sin's penalty - death must be paid./ This sentence was passed upon all Decreed by Jehovah on High My favour and love I recal And sinner - thou surely wilt die./ Since tomorrow my life may be over, Today shall engross all my care Oh, may I Heaven's favour implore, And for death and the Judgement prepare" and decorated below with stylized blossoming trees, urn-in-flower motifs, birds, fleur-de-lys, and flower baskets centering the wrought garland-surrounded identification, "Harriet Thornton Her Work," the whole enclosed by a meandering border of flowers and foliage--18in. x 19in.
