After Cristofano Allori 19th Century The Hospitality of St. Julian Oil on canvas 64 1/2 x 48 inches (163.8 x 121.9 cm) The original of this work is in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence. St. Julian, to atone for having accidentally murdered his parents, devoted himself to sheltering travellers beside a river crossing. One evening a shivering, half-naked leper was ferried across the river, and St. Julian not only took him in but allowed him to sleep in his own bed. In the morning the traveller revealed that he was actually an angel and that for his good works St. Julian had been forgiven.
Not lined. Extensive cracquelure. Wide band of inpaint, 2-3 inches wide, along the lower edge. Areas of inpaint on the thigh and knee of the nude beggar; on the hull of the boat; immediately next to the ankle of St. Julian; in the architecture at upper right quadrant; in the sky above the head of the boatman at upper left. Some paint losses in the inpainted area in the lower left corner. Small depression, approximately the size of a nickel, with attendant paint loss on the leg of the boatman's trousers.
