Wimille, Auto Union, Mercedes, Alfa Roméo, Delage… Un courrier en date du 23 mai 1992 émanant du commanditaire de l'œuvre en explique avec humour la genèse : " Cette fresque fut donc conçue pour orner les murs du magasin automobile que j'allais ouvrir au 83, rue de la Boétie ! Nanti de prestigieuses ferrailles j'en étais venu, faute de pouvoir disposer de numéraires suffisants, à envisager un échange pour m'assurer les services d'un peintre d'une de mes relations qui rongeait son frein dans un atelier niché dans les charmilles non loin de Denfert Rochereau. Au début des années 50, on possédait pour tout légendaire que le souvenir des modèles ayant anticipé avant le conflit aux grandes compétitions. D'où l'explication du panorama de ceux-ci dont les anachronismes voulus s'aggravent avec la présence d'un circuit manifestement inspiré par la topographie d'une piste où se déroulent les 24 heures du Mans. Comme convenu, une Bugatti 37 " Tecla " préparée par mes mécaniciens Jean Renard et Robert Legac fut remise au peintre pour solde de tout compte.
