American School, 19th Century Miniature Portraits of the Patten Family. Unsigned, the sitters identified in inscriptions on backing paper inscribed "Stephen Patten and Celia Patten, Daniel Lowell - Jane Lowell - Charles Lowell and Susan H. Patten" and "Taken about 1816". Watercolor, ink, and gouache on paper, c. 1812, depicting bust-length profile portraits of Stephen and Celia Patten and their four children, in linked oval reserves with paint decorated borders, 7 x 8 3/4 in., mounted in the original beaded gilt gesso and molded wood frame. Condition: Minor toning. Note: Genealogical records indicate that Stephen Patten was born on May 15, 1765, in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts, the son of Willis Patten and Hannah Sargent. On November 3, 1808 he married Susan Hopkins of Portland, Maine. Susan died in 1809, and another record indicates he married Celia Lowell of Portland, Maine in 1810. Three of the children Daniel, Charles, and Jane, indicated with the last name of Lowell were the offspring from Celia's first marriage to Daniel Lowell of Portland, Maine. Daniel died April 28, 1809. Susan, the youngest child illustrated, was born in 1810, and was the first child born to Stephen and Celia Patten. They went on to have three more children, Celia, George, and Edward, all born in Portland, Maine. A cardboard backing bears pen inscriptions identifying the names of the sitters, and an applied printed paper label for the Boston Milk Street firm "F. Lloyd, Carver, Gilder, and Picture Frame Maker...", and an inscription "This taken from older home C.W.P. 1859." Provenance: Bob Thayer, Massachusetts.
