An Attic white-ground lekythos, attributed to the Bird-painter 450-425 B.C. The black neck, handle and lip with unpainted top, the shoulder and body white-ground, the shoulder with palmettes and volute scrolls; running meander between pairs of lines above and below picture Grave scene: a grave stele hung with pink taeniae , with a figure standing to each side. On the left a young woman with head bowed holds up a large flat basket with foliate branches from which hang pink taeniae , she wears a long dark red garment through which her body outline is shown in white; to the right of the stele stands a young man, his drapery schematic, looking towards the stele with forlorn expression, (minor repair to neck, lip and foot, otherwise intact) 9in. (22.9cm.) high
