He began his revision of society in the New Lanark, Scotland, cotton mills. The success of his programs there, which emphasized education of children and fair treatment of workers among other reforms, encouraged other Utopian experiments. Owen himself eventually began a Utopian community at New Harmony, Indiana, but the experiment failed, in large part because Owen was not present to manage the group. Fisher makes the case that Owen's system "contains within itself the seeds of its own destruction." Owen maintained that religion made men weak, bigoted, fanatic and hypocritical, and should not be the basis of society. Fisher argues that Owen's treatment of workers, especially the poor, was based on moral principles, and thus religion is the only real basis of society. Although professing great respect for Owen's ideals and reported successes, Fisher uses this forum to dismantle the "New Society." Condition: Spine with tape repair; several leaves loose. Moderate toning and foxing. Some insect damage in top margin pp 19-27.
