An important and unique George IV sterling silver private die table service of flatware / canteen, the majority London 1821 by John and Henry Lias In a King's pattern variant with union shell heal, die cast with a crest of out of a coronet composed of five fleurs-de-lis manifest two lions' heads addorsed. Comprising: twelve table forks twelve table spoons twelve dessert forks twelve dessert spoons four sauce ladles a cream ladle (London 1824 by William Eley II and William Fearn) a sugar sifter (London 1824 by William Eley II and William Fearn) a pair of asparagus tongs (London 1824 by William Eley II and William Fearn) a potato spoon (London 1824 by William Eley II and William Fearn, journeyman’s mark a cameo H) a basting spoon (later converted to a salad fork, London 1824 by William Eley II and William Fearn, journeyman’s mark a cameo H) Also to include: twelve filled handled fruit knives, crested the same London 1827 by William Eley II (five with silver blades, seven with later steel blades) twelve matched filled handled table knives, London 1825 by William Eley II with engraved crests of demi-eagle displayed with two heads issuing from flames. (81) Weighable silver – 5707 grams / 183.48 ozt The crest is for Blicke For Charles Tufton Blicke (1781 - 1837) of Regent Street Westminster, and previously Carron House, Lambeth, son of Sir Charles Blicke (1745-1815) of Bedford Place, Bloomsbury, and his wife Jane Phelp. He was also a descendant of Nicholas Tufton (1578-1631) 1st Earl of Thanet. Educated at Queen's College, Oxford (BA 1802 and MA 1808). Sir Charkes Blicke obtained a grant of armorial bearing from the Kings of Arms at The College of Arms in 1809 however his son Charles later petitioned for a new crest in 1819 for an unknown reason. At the time of these grants, Sir Charles and his son Charles were stated as living at Caroon or Carroon Park, St Mary’s, Lambeth in the County of Surrey. This a variant name for their Lambeth residence of Carron House. His mural monument (incorrect death date) is in the Parish Church St Mary the Virgin, Twickenham, co. Middlesex showing this crest. In the will of Charles Tufton Blicke dated 3rd January 1838, we see that “I desire that my sister, Francis, Lady Loftus Osway wife of Major General Sir Loftus William Osway may have at my decease all my furniture, linen, plate, books, stouzes(?) glass and all the property of that description which I may possess for their sole distuist? and (?) use and I (?) This to be a codicil to my will, C Tuffton Bicke // soubow (?) 2nd December 1835 witness Keith Barnes.” Sir Loftus William Osway (1774-1854) married Francis Blicke (d. 25th Nov 1872) on 19th Nov 1814, he died in his home at 17 Grosvenor Square (also owned Cwm Elan, Near Rhadyr in South Wales). Had issue as Loftus Charles Otway (1815-1864) whom married Gertrude Marceliana De La Puelba, another son Robert Otway and daughter Georgina Frances Otway (1815-1885) whom married Captain W.J Hughes (c. 1812 - 1894) of 4th Light -dragoons. Georgina inherited from her parents a large property in London and in 1873 assumed the name of Otway after that of Hughes. She had ten children. Wills Index - Personal estate of £140,783.19.10d. Resworn Aug 1886 £148,366.13.6d. Admin 9 Nov with two codicils of personal estate of Georgina wife of William John M. L. Otway esq late of 13 Grovesnor Sq. Was granted at Principal Registry under certain specialities to said William J.M.L. Otway of 13 Grovesnor Sq., Jocelyn Tufton F. Otway of 14 St. George's Place, Knightsbridge, son and Vivian Ellis of 16 Spring Gardens, solicitor. Provenance (presumably): Charles Tufton Blicke (1781-1837) Lady Frances Osway (1790-1872) Georgina Frances Osway (1815-1885) William John Marjoribanks (Hughes) Loftus-Otway (c. 1812 - 1894) Jocelyn Tufton Farrant Otway (d.1853 – alive at least 1907) married 1884 Eva May Clairmonte, daughter of John L.
