ANONYMOUS. Urbis Romae novissima delineatio MDCXXII . Rome: Giuseppe de Rossi, 1622. Engraved bird's-eye view of Rome on a full Royal sheet, 398 x 543mm, showing the whole of the city as seen from the West, including outlying ruins and surrounding fields, key listing 121 features of interest. (Trimmed to platemark, some discolouration, some neat repairs to occasional slight loss along upper edge, stain affecting upper right corner only, edges neatly reinforced on verso.) POSSIBLY UNIQUE, FIRST STATE. Frutaz was unable to locate a copy of this plan of Rome, and hitherto its existence has been inferred only from a reference in F. Martinelli's Roma ex ethnica sacra sanctorum Petri, et Pauli apostolica praedicatione profuso sanguine , Rome: 1653 (p. 444). It became a popular image, being republished in 1637, and later in several editions. The second state had seven extra places added to the legend, and the date was changed to 1637 in both the title and dedication. Rossi was no doubt inspired by Ambrogio Brambilla's Novissima urbis Romae desciptio MDLXXXX , Rome: Nicholaes van Aelst, 1590 (Frutaz CXXXIII), which in turn had as its archetype Mario Cartaro's Urbis Romae descriptio , Rome: 1575 (Frutaz CXXV). This was influenced by, but not a copy of Ugo Pinnard and Giacomo Bos's Urbis Romae descriptio , Rome: Antonio Lafreri, 1555 (Frutaz CXII). The present map has not slavishly followed other preceding examples, but some elements have been updated, whilst the key has varied in every version. The clarity of the plan, and the clear relationship between the city, its walls, and the surounding land, ensured the enduring popularity of this bird's-eye view of Rome. Not in Frutaz (see Frutaz CL for the 1637 edition); not in Arrigoni and Barterelli.
