ARAGONESE, Sebastiano (b. 1523). Monumenta antique urbis et agri Brixiani . [Brescia,] 1564 [but printed 1778]. 2 o (392 x 275 mm). 34 leaves with white-on-black woodcuts printed on rectos only. (Dampstaining, title with small hole affecting one letter, gutter margins of first three leaves renewed.) 20th-century boards. Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 7 May 1956. A VERY RARE ARCHITECTURAL WORK. According to Brunet, these woodcuts were discovered by a collector in 1778 who then had a few proofs pulled. The dramatic cuts are printed in white letters on black ground and reproduce Roman monuments and inscriptions. No copies appear in American Book Prices Current in at least 30 years.
