ARRIGHI, Ludovico degli (called Vicentino). Regola da imparare scrivere varii caratteri de Littere con il suoi compassi et misure . Venice: Nicolo d'Aristottle detto Zoppino, 1533. 4 o (205 x 147 mm). 30 leaves. Title within historiated woodcut border and device of a hand holding a quill, full- and half-page woodcuts of pens and printer's device at end, woodcut writing specimens and alphabets by Ugo da Carpi and Eustachio Celebrino. (Inkstamp removed on title and mended, a few occasional small stains.) Late 19th-century green morocco, edges gilt. Provenance : acquired from H.P. Kraus, 1977. This edition is a reprint of Zoppino's edition of the previous year, differing only in the last leaf which adds a recipe for making ink. The blocks used were cut for the original editions of the two parts of Arrighi's manual: Il modo di temperare le penne (1522) cut by Ugo da Carpi and Regola da imparara scrivere (1523) cut by Eustachio Celebrino. These are the earliest printed examples of what became known as Chancery Cursive writing. All of the early editions of Arrighi's writing manuals are very rare, especially complete. Bonacini 1968.
