* Artist Unknown (Likely French, 19th Century) Portrait of a Gentleman, 1840 oil on canvas dated (lower left) 24 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches. Estimate $ 400-600 Property from the William Robert Smith Trust, Sherman, Illinois, sold to benefit the Animal Protective League of Springfield and Sangamon County and The Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Illinois Note: Reverse of canvas is stamped: au Spectre Solaire/ Quai de l'Ecole, 18/ et 38,/ Rue Nve. Vivienne/ Colcomb-Bourgeois. With three patched repairs to the reverse, the largest of which is approximately 8 x 1 3/8 inches. Craquelure throughout. Stretcher marks along all four edges from previous stretchers. Significant area of loss to the paint layer along the lower edge of the canvas (please request additional images). Examination under UV light reveals a relatively even varnish and scattered instances of retouch throughout, particularly to the subject's forehead and to the patched repairs.
