Axel Salto (b. Copenhagen 1889, d. Frederiksberg 1961) A large conical shaped stoneware vase modelled with ears of rye in relief. Decorated with blue and brown glaze. Signed Salto 39. Made at Saxbo. H. 34 cm. Diam. 40 cm. Inner diam. of mouth 8 cm. Provenance: Acquired by the current owner's grandfather who knew Axel Salto personally. Given to the current owner's parents in 1947. Thence by descent within the family. Literature: “Axel Salto - Master of Stoneware”, CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark. Ill. in model register p. 185, #371 however as a Royal Copenhagen piece listed with design year 1949. The present vase is signed and dated by Axel Salto in 1939.
