BATMAN INCORPORATED Vol. 1 & 2 Nos. 0 to 13 and BATMAN Vol. 2 Nos. 0 to 30 plus Annuals 1 & 2 * THE NEW 52 * Lot of 128 Comics Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: DC Comics] Date Published: 2011-2013 Description: Batman Incorporated Vol. 1 #s 1-8 (including two copies of #1), Batman Incorporated Vol. 2 #s 0-13 (including two copies of #1, #5, #6, #10, #11, #12, and #13, and three copies of #0, #2, #4, and #7), and Batman Incorporated Special; Batman Vol. 2 #s 0-30 (all including at least two copies minus 24 and 30, including three copies of #7, #9, #10, #11, #12, #14, #15, #16, and #21, four copies of #0, #5, #6, and #8, five copies of #13, and six copies of #1) plus 23.1-23.4 and Annuals 1 & 2; lot of 128 issues. Generally VF/NM or better. Covers and interiors by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, James Tynion IV, Becky Cloonan, Andy Kubert, Dustin Nguyen, Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham, and others. Ian Levine Quits the Scene. "What an incredible accomplishment the DC Universe Collection is," you may be thinking. "Clearly a labor of love, unlikely ever again to be achieved. But why on earth would Ian Levine decide to stop collecting DC comics and sell off his monumental archive of 40,000+ funnybooks? What sort of personal crisis could have precipitated such an action?" It's an excellent question, and the answer has everything to do with DC's "The New 52" and its legacy. We'll allow Mr. Levine to answer the question in his own words: "The ending to all this is not a particularly joyful one. After fifty years of collecting these amazing and breathtaking comics, DC became almost embarrassed by their rich history, and heartlessly and cruelly cancelled all their long running lines and went back to number one with a complete restart. After running beautifully for well over seventy years, Action Comics ended its run at number 904 and started again at number one. This was sickening. I questioned what I had spent my entire life building up. And so I handed over the collection to its co-owner... and gave him permission for the entire collection to be auctioned. DC’s callous act of crapping all over its lifelong dedicated fans had finished me off. So I went back to collecting my beloved Northern Soul and watching my beloved Doctor Who and put my comic collecting behind me after fifty years. But I still ADORE those early Justice League of America comics. Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky. I still get goosebumps at Crisis On Earth One. The very quintessence and epitome of my Silver Age youth." — Ian Levine, from a previously unpublished essay, "Achieving an Insurmountable Quest," October 2015. Note: At the buyer's discretion, this lot of raw comics can be submitted by PBA to CGC for grading and encapsulation with a "DC Universe Collection" provenance designation on the labels. To request this service, contact PBA's comic book department for terms and conditions. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com. Enjoying PBA's Batman sale? A very small number of softcover and limited edition hardcover auction catalogues are available for purchase. The catalogues are fully illustrated, thoroughly researched, and make excellent reference works for Batman fans.
