FIRST EDITION. SOMERVILE, William (1675-1742). The Chase. A Poem . London: W. Bulmer, 1796, 4° (295 x 230mm), 13 engravings by Thomas Bewick after John Bewick (light scattered spotting), 19th-century polished calf gilt (rebacked with the original spine laid-down, corners rubbed). Provenance: Caroline Simmons (name in ink to free endpaper) -- John Mitchell Marshall (auction description tipped to free endpaper). Hugo 94. FIRST BEWICK EDITION. Hugo notes that "this work contains the best specimens of John Bewick's abilities as a designer"; while the Gentleman's Magazine observed: "the engravings to Somervile's Chase will be a monument of Fame of more celebrity than marble can bestow".
