BIBLE, NEW TESTAMENT, in English-- The First New Testament Printed in the English Language (1525 or 1526) Translated from the Greek by William Tyndale Reproduced in Facsimile . Edited by Francis Fry. Bristol: printed for the editor, 1862. PRINTED ON VELLUM. 8° (185 x 125mm). Woodcut title ornament, illustration, headpieces and initials, and lithographic facsimile illustrations. Illuminated with 13 miniatures in gold and colours, and initials and chapter and verse markings in gold, blue, and red. Contemporary black morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, the covers with central, strapwork stars of David surrounded by interlaced strapwork borders embellished with foliate tools, within double fillet borders, the flat spine gilt in 6 compartments, lettered in 2, the others decorated with strapwork patterns, turn-ins decorated with roll-tooled gilt dentelles, gilt vellum doublures, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed, upper joint partially split, cracking on hinges). LIMITED TO 177 COPIES, ONE OF 'A FEW COPIES' ON VELLUM, ILLUMINATED IN GOLD AND COLOURS, AND SIGNED BY THE EDITOR 'Francis Fry , Cotham , Bristol , 3 [?]Ma. 1862' on p.18. Fry states on p.17 that the edition is limited to 177 copies, of which 26 are large-paper copies in a quarto format, and a few are printed on vellum: according to a pencilled note on the front free endleaf, there were 'only 7 done on vellum', and of those 7, the present copy is 'unique in this size'. The facsimile of Tyndale's translation is produced lithographically from the copy that was in the Bristol Bible College at the time, and is now held by the British Library, and the volume also contains facsimiles of leaves from works published by Peter Schoeffer.
