BINDINGS -- APPERLEY, Charles James (1779-1843). Memoirs of the Life of the late John Mytton, Esq. of Halston Shropshire . London: Rudolph Ackermann 1837. 8 (237 x 152mm). Engraved title with vignette and 18 hand-coloured plates drawn and etched by H. Alken and T. J. Rawlins, aquatinted by E. Duncan. (Occasional marginal soiling.) Full crimson morocco gilt, sides with roll-tool and triple fillet border, spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the remainder with repeated floral tooling, g.e. Second edition 'which is more interesting than the first on account of the increased number of plates.' Schwerdt I, p. 38. Charles DICKENS (1812-1870, editor). The Pic Nic Papers . London: Henry Colburn, 1841. 3 volumes, 12 (188 x 116mm). 14 etched or lithographed plates after G. Cruikshank, H. K. Browne and R. J. Hamerton. (Plates browned, vol. I lacking contents leaf.) Full polished calf gilt by Tout, sides with triple gilt fillets and fleurons at inner corners, gilt spine compartments with morocco lettering-pieces, g.e. Provenance : Courtenay T. Wilson (armorial bookplate). Later issue with imprint of Cox and Son on verso of title to volume I. Dickens' own contribution to this book was the first story, 'The Lamplighter'. Through it he was able to raise 300 for the widow of John Macrone, publisher of his first book. Eckel p. 143. HEYWOOD, Thomas (d. 1650). The Dramatic Works now first collected with illustrative notes and a memoir of the author , edited by R. H. Shepherd. London: John Pearson 1874. 6 volumes, 8 (225 x 142mm). Facsimiles of the original title pages, typographical decorations. Full tree calf with polished calf spines by Edward Grieve, Edinburgh, sides with gilt roll-tool floral border, spines gilt with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces, gilt turn-ins and board edges, t.e.g., others uncut. Provenance : James B. Gallie (bookplate). The first collection to contain most of Heywood's plays, on large paper -- and Lord Shaftersbury's Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times , Birmingham: John Baskerville 1773, fifth edition, in contemporary tree calf (rebacked, new endpapers).
