Extra-illustrated with an unsigned engraved portrait of Boileau in three states, before and after letters and on satin; an engraved portrait of Boileau after Giradon by Saint Aubin in two states, before and after the frame, also with the engraver's original pencil drawing; an engraved portrait of the tomb of Boileau by Moreau le Jeune in two states, preliminary etched and before letters; 7 plates on papier Chine by Simonet and others after Moreau le Jeune illustrating Le Lutrin ; and 12 other engraved portraits of Ariosto by Sapi after Ermini, Molière by A. Migneret after Desenne and Mignard, Racine, Homer and others, mostly proofs on papier Chine. Uncut. Contemporary straight-grained green half morocco, flat spines in ruled compartments lettered in gilt, silk liners and markers (some dark spots). Provenance : A.-A. Renouard (see attribution below, shelf mark 'No. 4263') -- Leon Rattier (ex-libris) -- Cortlandt F. Bishop (ex-libris) -- Mortimer L. Schiff (ex-libris, sold Sotheby's 5 July 1938, lot 657, to:) -- J.R. Abbey (his note of purchase at rear of vol I, sold Sotheby's 21 June 1965, lot 157) -- Francis Kettaneh (ex-libris). FINE, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY ON VELLUM with an illustrious provenance. Brunet describes this as an edition on vellum with 'figures ajoutées', without noting how many copies were printed, but lists the price of 132 francs which Renouard paid for his copy. Van Praet states that only two copies were printed on vellum, those of the duc d'Abrantès and Renouard. This has led to identification of the present copy as Renouard's (see Bibliothèque de l'Amateur III, p. 28). The plates to Le Lutrin after Moreau le Jeune by Simonet, Delvaux, and de Ghendt are dated 1805-09. According to Cohen/de Ricci, both this suite and the portrait by Saint-Aubin were commissioned by Renouard and placed 'dans les éditions parues à la fin de la République et pendant l'Empire'.
